Over the last century, more than 200 million people suffered under totalitarian regimes worldwide. Shockingly, there's no single memorial dedicated to their memory, nor does society fully grasp the gravity of this evil. Many nations have glossed over their dark pasts, leaving us ignorant of the horrors of totalitarianism. And now, we see its resurgence, claiming lives in the heart of Europe. It's time to face this threat head-on.
The Memorial embodies a powerful truth: totalitarian regimes thrive with society's consent and support, only to ensnare those very individuals as its victims.
The Memorial's primary symbol is the voting hand, echoing dozens of them scattered across its grounds. These hands, bereft of identity, signify the insignificance of individual personalities in the face of the system. They speak volumes: the system consumes their votes, entombing them alive. Initially towering at 4.5 meters, these hands gradually sink lower, until they defiantly protrude just half a meter from the ground. They serve as a stark reflection of the majority, persisting in voting even as the system seeks to bury them alive.
People do not become enslaved suddenly because of a chain that binds us once in the morning. This chain is forged link by link by the evil in the darkness of our indifference. Our silent consent lets anti-human regimes ascent. Thus we become both victim and villain in this tragic narrative.
The Memorial lays bare a fundamental truth: totalitarianism thrives on the tacit approval of the majority - the ordinary people whose consent paves the way for oppressive systems and regimes. Yet, these very regimes, once established, inexorably erode the society that birthed them.
Totalitarianism, with its roots intertwined with democratic mechanisms, poses an ever-present danger to society. The Memorial serves as a stark reminder that we, the people, bear the weighty responsibility of preventing the resurgence of totalitarian tragedies in the future.
